I already wrote this on a different thread under movies and it is also on my favourite movies list on my profile, so I won't write them all again, but the LOTR movies were all great, as were the X-Men movies.

I need not post on this thread, but I have to say to knightmare...

You cannot POSSIBLY like the redux version of Apocalypse Now better than the original JUST for the sake of the extra 40 minutes?

That's cinematic taboo! The French plantation scene disrupted the flow of the film and made it hard to return to, and as for the Playboy-fun addition halfway through... what the hell?

THANK GOD I WAS RIGHT! The only version of Apocalypse Now that I have seen so far was the Redux version and I thought it was a fantastic film...except for the French scene and other subtle inclusions. I gave it five stars because I had a feeling that those scenes weren't in the original, thank god I was right about that. I also put it into my favourite movie list, not for Redux though, but for what the original version would have been like. I read that Coppola felt the need to add those extra scenes, but why? They ruined a perfect film.

Remember, shortcartoonist, Francis Ford Coppola's head got majorly fucked up throughout the late 70s and early 80s (combined trauma of the making of Apocalypse Now and his son's death under extraordinarily tragic circumstances) and he hasn't recovered (hence the horrific theatrical version of The Godfather: Part III, and multiple other films ever since) since.

So his fucked-up state of mind could be why he decided to go back and add those unnecessary scenes in.

I mean, there were some scenes that slipped in seamlessly and didn't do anything to harm the film, but we had already had the river scene set the rhythm and pace for the film, and the abrupt French plantation scene desecrated said pace and made it very difficult to return to the travelling-mood once we were back on the boat.

As for the playboy-fun scene, as aforementioned, that served absolutely no purpose being there, and its filming wasn't even completed in the first place (as is blatantly obvious from the certain amount of emotion invested in those bickering scenes only to jump back onto the boat as we're getting used to everything).

on the topic of directors cuts/special editions being worse than the original ...

40 year old virgin ... loved it at the cinemas, but you can only get the extended version on DVD which i'd honestly downgrade from 4 stars to 3 ... long movie for a comedy anyway and then it gets stuffed full of a whole pile of unecessary and largely unfunny padding that makes the whole thing feel sluggish and dull ... very disapointing

also the donnie darko directors cut wasnt a good idea
