About Me
Ruthlessly funny, impossibly attractive, and more intelligent than the guy who invented the pet rock, Adam Quigley is a humble writer and JoBlo.com movie critic with an affinity for referring to himself in the third person.

When not wasting every waking moment of his life watching, discussing, writing about, buying, making, editing, and fawning over movies, he spends his time wishing that he were still doing those things, and not dealing with that little nuisance known as "real life."

He also despises sarcasm, and would never dare use it in his writing.

The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe PG 2.5 Stars
It seems like so many people are in love with this movie, but I guess I'm in the minority of people who simply thought it was "pretty good". I thought much of the acting was laughable, and certain scenes especially cheesy and stupid. Other parts faired a lot better, but it didn't cancel the bad stuff out. I guess I should also point out that I've never been a fan of the book series, so that probably has a lot to do with it... (Then again, I hate Superman as a comic book character, but still loved SUPERMAN RETURNS)
The Day After Tomorrow The Day After Tomorrow PG-13 2.5 Stars
Entertaining, but nothing more.

This brutal gem from the director of "Lucky Number Slevin" deserves to recognized as one of the top British gangster films. It's up there with GET CARTER and THE LONG GOOD FRIDAY. See it if your a fan of the genre.

Every now and then, a sadistically violent, testosterone injected action film (lacking brains, a "good" story, and character development) comes along in all its brawny glory and just works. DEATH RACE is one of those films.

What suprises me most is that the film was directed by Paul W.S. Anderson, the much bashed shlockmeister behind Mortal Combat and AVP. People have compared him too Uwe Boll as one of the worst directors ever... I never agreed with this. I saw potential in him with EVENT HORIZON, and now DEATH RACE, with it's tight direction, editing, and style makes me curious as to what Anderson will put together in the future. I know he is capable of making good films. Wheater he does or not is up to him.

And we've got an excellent cast here aswell. Jason Statham (who brings his usual charisma, which is far from a bad thing), Ian McShane, and Joan Allen as the villian? Very good decision (though she is slightly underused).

So DEATH RACE isn't high art. No suprise there... but its a first-rate action picture that provides the right amount of thrills and gruesome kills. Hell of a way to end the summer movie season.
I know Paul W.S. Anderson films don't usually scream "see me," but DEATH RACE is a lot of fun, and if you know what to expect (Cars and Death!) you may end up enjoying yourself quite a bit!

I can see why some of my friends gave it one star and some gave 5. It's an original story that is filled with holes. There are too many coincidences for one story. Somebody should tell the writers "one or two coincidences are ok, hey it happens in the real life too right, but a million of them look fucking stupid in one story!" I am angry because this movie could be much better. The direction is good and stylized, the acting is very well balanced, the story really gets to your emotiions but god damn those plot holes! I was like this: Oh it started quite good...oh this is fucking stupid!...wait a minute, we may have somethin here...give me a break... Then came the great ending with a Coldplay song. I had to give it at least a three!

I've seen Paul McGuigan's two movies, this and Lucky Number Slevin, it looks like he is trying to shoot modern hitchcockian movies and Josh Hartnett is his James Stewart.
if you can get past some stupid parts in the story, there is a big possibility thay you are going to love this..

The funniest film of 2008. The Zoolander of actors. A hillariously sharp satire on the movie business. The opening credits are intensely enjoyable from vapid rap-star promoting "booty sweat" beverage, to the man who gave the world the "faty farts" franchise in return for drugs (aka Eddie Murphy), to an aging formerly highest grossing action star whos once sucess hinged on 6 films involving a man saving the world from its staryed tilt, to my favourite of all a five time Academy Award winning Australian actor who recently stared in "Satan's Alley" a story about a priests love for another priest. In truth Robert Downey Jr. steals the show and is fast becoming one of the best acors working today. Stiller shows he still has the nack to send up another overly self concious industry wether it be models/actors (not the other way round). If you hate the way Hollywood is headed, let it redeem itself by making fun of its many character flaws. See this movie.

A gritty independant gem. FROZEN RIVER feels almost like a documentary, with it's shoe-string budget, HD shakey cam photography, and very believeable performances. A gripping story and lush snow-covered locales reminded me a little of Fargo, but there is no dark comedy, or comedy of any kind here! Expect to be saddened and a little depressed, and you may be truely surprised.

Melissa Leo gives easily one of the best performances this year. Lets see if she's remembered come Oscar time.
Here's one worth looking for. A great first effort from director Courtney Hunt, featuring one of the year's best performances.

Hey everyone, thought I'd just share for those interested my first short film. I'm at the Film School in New Zealand and we just completed a '5 minute drama' where we each individually write and direct our own film with a team behind us who alternate the important roles depending on the director. Shot on a rather standard DVX102 (which isn't too bad I guess), this is my final product, but have edited my own DIRECTORS CUT outside of the school as the 5 minute cut made wasn't the way I intended it to pan out. Please comment and be truthful, I like hearing all feedback, keep in mind I ain't a writer and I know my dialogue isn't the best.

    Pineapple Express Pineapple Express
    3.5 Stars by Michael
Although not on par with Superbad or Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Judd Apatow proves once again he's the the master of modern comedic movies with this explosively entertaining for the most part and consistantly hilarious stoner flick. Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg provide a screenplay that works for the most part and indie director David Gordon Green, (Snow Angels, George Washington) does a fabulous job. Green is probably the most gifted director an Apatow-produced film has ever had. As for the acting, it's great as usual. Rogen is consistantly funny but the real scene-stealer is James Franco who nails his role perfectly and creates one of the most likeable and funny movie sidekicks in recent years. The movie is chalk-full of solid supporting performances/cameos from Gary Cole, James Remar, Bill Hader, a side-splittingly funny Danny McBride and most unexpectedly Rosie Perez as a dirty cop in pursuit of the film's two stoners. Although I didn't like it as much as some of Apatow's other efforts and towards the end it kind of fell apart, this is solid entertainment. It will make you laugh to the point of tears and it's the funniest movie of the summer, hands down. Grade: B

Forgetting Sarah Marshall Forgetting Sarah Marshall
    4.0 Stars by Craig
    Directed by: Nicholas Stoller.
Starring: Jason Segel, Kristen Bell, Mila Kunis, Russell Brand, Bill Hader, Paul Rudd.

<< "He turned down a blow job from his ex-girlfriend...mid-blow job. You know how hard that is for a man? It's called blue balls. He's like Gandhi! But better...he likes puppets!" >>

The story follows a relatively lazy, unfocused man who scores for a hit TV show he hates but is dating the hottest girl in Hollywood...the star of the show. After she dumps him after a 5 year relationship, he finds it extremely hard to take and decides to go to a spot in Hawaii she told him about to get away from it all. But before long he meets her there with her new eccentric boyfriend and he starts to fall for the hotels receptionist.

I remember reading about this film briefly before The Heartbreak Kid came out, not knowing who was behind the film at the time I thought it was Hollywood ripping off a film that was to be released before it...but then I saw the horrendous Heartbreak Kid and can easily say this film has no comparisons and is leaps and bounds above that shit pile.

As with recent Apatow productions, the film carries the similar formula mixed together...sweet romance and raunchy comedy. In any other case this formula would no doubt get old and stale, but the Apatow team continue to prove they are the head of the game and Jason Segel proves to be a strong writer for that team.

Simply directed and assured, the film does start a little weak, I'll admit that, but before long Jason Segel's brand of humor starts to kick it up a notch and right into full gear, it is extremely witty, slightly vulgar but always laugh out loud and the strongest thing Jason kept in mind was to balance and the film nicely steps back into its character that slowly, but surely develop and the character moments are actually quite sweet and believable and never stale or 'in your face' cliched.

The performance are a strong point of the film as everyone involved, lead or not delivers something brilliant. Jason Segel proves to have the right charisma and raunchy tone to stand strong as an Apatow type character and Kristen Bell even has a few believable moments (I usually can't stand her). This is the first role I have seen Mila Kunis in outside of Family Guy and not only is she so damn beautiful, but she really delivers quite a sweet, charismatic and assured performance, it will be interesting to see what she can do in the future...and alongside the great sub roles played by Bill Hader and Paul Rudd, Jack McBrayer had me in complete tears throughout, he really needs to be a strong comedic force in more films.

Forgetting Sarah Marshall is a sweet surprise, yet not so surprising coming from the Apatow team. May not be as strong or sophisticated as Knocked Up, but it easily stands amongst the Apatow greats thanks to strong wit, great characters and very strong performances.
Took long enough to finally be released here.

    GLORIOUS! GLORIOUS! GLORIOUS!

Acting is impeccable (top notch) and incredibly believable. So believable in fact that the conversation about the abortion made me feel extremely queasy and desirous of ending the film (I am squeamish of nature) - that's how real it was.
Definitely haven't seen such brilliant actors in a while...!

Story flows along smoothly, with just the right amount of suspense to keep us on the edge of our seats.
The ending blew me away! It was so simple yet so poignant.

Probably the best thing that's happened to foreign cinema in the year 2008 (or was it at the end of 2007? Pff, doesn't matter! I'm sure it owns the foreign films of 2007 anyhow!).

    Pfff!!

This had some potential, but it all went away within a mere half hour!
Perhaps original, yet the only reason it is, is probably because it's an under-exploited subtype of the rom-com genre.
Ryan Reynolds doesn't enchant me. Abigail Breslin doesn't either (at least not in this film).
Totally disappointed that the great Rachel Weisz accepted to play in this film.
Isla Fisher is most certainly the highlight of it all.

    Besides that?
    Hmm, nothing.
This is too plain and predictable. Needs more spice and twist.

    Tropic Thunder Tropic Thunder
    4.0 Stars by Michael
    Advanced screening:

Tropic Thunder is a film I've anticipated (from it's trailers/ Downey Jr's "Blackface" controversy) for quite awhile, but knowing Ben Stiller's hit (Reality Bites) or miss (Zoolander) directing filmography, I kept my expectations relatively lukewarm. Luckily that wasn't necessary because it's Stiller's best effort as a director to date aswell as one of the best comedies of the year.

Starting with the best fake-trailers this side of Grindhouse, TROPIC THUNDER develops into the most uniquely wacky blend of satire/action/ and gross-out I've ever seen. At first it appears to be a straight-up spoof on popular war films, then it becomes a film within a film, then an attack on Hollywood and the film industry in general. Also present are some rather shocking (and hilarious) sight gags (exploding film-crew members, the brutal slaughter of an endangered species) that managed to catch everyone off gaurd.

The main reason TROPIC THUNDER works so well though is it's stellar ensemble cast. You have the likes of Ben Stiller, Robert Downey Jr, Jack Black, Jay Baruchel, Steve Coogan, and Nick Nolte all turning in terrific comedic performances that they obviously had fun with. Tom Cruise gives the extended cameo of the year as a studio executive, while Tobey Maguire and a slew of other actors make notable appearences. Ultimately it is Downey Jr. who steals almost every scene as the platoon's very white, African-American squad leader.

Rude, witty, and ballsy, TROPIC THUNDER is a great time at the movies. It's hard finding worth-while large budget comedies these days, but DIRECTOR Ben Stiller, supported by a strong cast and a great premise, has proved himself to be the right man for the task. 8/10
I highly recommend seeing this superior satire when it hits theatres. It's one of the best comedies of 2008, and possibly the biggest surprise this summer.

Batman and James Gordon join forces with Gotham's new District Attorney, Harvey Dent, to take on a psychotic bank robber known as The Joker, whilst other forces plot against them, and Joker's crimes grow more and more deadly.

    *Possible spoilers ahead*

After a year and a half long wait, the sequel to the brilliant Batman Begins(2005), is finally here and boy did I enjoy it! It surpasses all my expectations and is FAR SUPERIOR to Begins. A Sequel which is far better and will be remembered for doing so. I you thought Begins was good, you will be plesently suprised. The Dark knight is as great as everyone says it is and more I'm still finding the words to describe even several days after watching it.

Yes, before I started watching the film, I knew Heath Ledger's perfromance would be amazing in the role of the Joker, and I was right. I have to admit that it didn't suprise me one bit. The time that he took to perfect his rol and the perfection in his voice, mannerisms and behaviour is just outstanding. He's created a character that's incredibly menacing and even in a 12A film, scary to watch. I'm sure he'll receive a post homours Oscar nomation, winning it I'm not so sure. It'll be down to whether the Academy can avoid the snobbery that they have over blockbuster films winning at the Oscars. He's character was also very funny and had several one liners, which I did laugh at. I don't think I'll ever forget his performance. It'll always be in my top five of all time.

Christian Bale repises his role as the caped crusader and has obtained a far huskier voice, which was great to hear. Bale is now my favourite Batman and I'm sure others would agree. Even as Bruce Wayne he oozes coolness in every scene he's in. His Batman is far darker than many previously and makes for a great character to watch.Bale also plays he's character tremendouly well and should be given credit for that, Also worth mentioning Aaron Eckhart's tremendous perfromance as two-facem who I didn't think would be good at all. Worth mentioniong Gary Oldman's Lt Gordon, Maggie Glyyenhaal's and Morgan Freeman's perfromance aswell, who all delivered fine performances. I'd really like to see Bale get some sort of credit for his performance, as it really was great.

The Dark Knight's cinematography was absolutly breathtaking to watch. In particular the sublime, opening sequence, which was inspired by Heat-which you can see . The colours, and sequences filmed just added a little realism to the films, giving it that post 9/11 feel. It also adds a little fear to the viewer, for instance in the Mayot's funeral. It drwas upon real events, which is just superb. Talking of superbm that Opening sequence was outstanding to watch. One of my favourite shots was one of the Joker, in the middle of the street, in almost a God like stance. Everything in the scene is quite shocking to watch. The joker and his henchman don't just feel like characters in a film-where you can just write them off. These characters really feel real and the sounds of the guns shots, in this scene only emphathises this. One classic line which I won't forget by the Joker.

I believe what doesn't kill you, makes you stronger..

The screenplay in the Dark Knight has to be one of the finest that I've seen for a summer blockbuster...since..well forever. It is obviously responsible for some great lines in the film. The scenes with the Joker and Batmanl, for instance-The iterrogation scene. I'm sure the screenplay will be up for an Oscar ans it is one of the best parts of the film for me. Loved this line from Alfred..

Some men just want to watch the world burn!

Nolan has now set the bar for Great summer blocckbusters. Everything in the film is FLAWLESS. The running time of nearly 3 hours flew b. His direction is absoulty outstanding. I just hope BAFTA award him with a Best Director nod next year.

The Dark Knight contains some amazing camer shots. For instance, as I mentioned before-that opening shot of the Jokers-WOW. One sequence towards the end, was just sensational to watch. I just hope this is the start of great summer blockbusters to come.

The score by Hans Zimmer is just sensational to hear. Every single piece of music livens up every scene and just get an absoulte buzz, when you watch it. You can;t help but cheers and smile when you hear part of that score. Just mesmerising. I hope it gets awarded at next years Oscars aswell.

I really think the editing is one of the sucess points of the film. The pinning together of some scenes , two or three at some stages really addes tension to the scene and sheer joy for the viewer. This adds to the experience and really makes it one hell of an enoyable experience.

Overall The Dark Knight is an absoulte MASTERPIECE. Filled with sublime acting, cinematorgpahy, excellent editing, screenplay. Expect the Dark Knight to receive several BAFTA noms and some OSCARS noms. I can't tell you how great this film is and how musch I enjoyed it. You must go along and see it for yourself.

    Oustanding.

    Highly recomended

    10/10

Just a brilliant mesh of everything. sound, cinematography, acting, and everything else. I felt emotinally drained afterwards when the film ending. The film asks us if we have lived the way we want to live, and how we would respond if a unforunate situation would happen to us. Julian Schnabel's brillant direction puts us into Jean Do's view of life and through out the film we live through him going through his struggles of everyday. << "You see, madness is like gravity, all it takes is a little...push" >>

The story follows Batman a year after his accounter with Ra's Al Ghul and his thugs, the streets remain the same and Batman continues to do what he can with the help of newly appointed Commissioner, Jim Gordon and Gotham's new D.A, Harvey Dent. Before long a menacing madman called the Joker introduces something into Gotham that no one would have ever expected.

This is no doubt the hundredth review you have read on this film, massively hype for years by fans and recently by the general public, reviews have been pouring in by the bucketload...my review is simply just a reminder, from both an obsessed fan and a general moviegoer, that this film is beyond anyones expectations, especially mine and that it simply is outstanding.

Everything about the first film is simply raised in level here, everything seems to be in a new direction, yet never forgetting what made Begins so great. Christopher Nolan has always been my favorite director and he has simply proved it here by a mile. To many it might appear flashy that he has taken hold of the newest technology for the film with IMAX cameras etc and in the wrong hands it would have just been for show, but Nolan is god behind these cameras and the epic scope is deftly handled and perfectly assured, the man is long overdue to be recognised more...and Wally Pfeister simply dazzles with the assured tone on this epic scale, it adds such a lovely feel.

The Nolan brothers screenplay is simply remarkable and again, 'beyond' everything I expected from the film. I was one of the men who knew the film was going to be more than just a Batman film, the footage I saw showed it, the dialogue rang true of it and as I am no doubt repeating in this review, its more than you would ever expect. In Batman 89, the problem that fell on it was the fact that the storytelling was lax and rather second-rate and Joker became a first rate character over Batman, who simply became third rate. Begins proved that Batman and Bruce Wayne can be powerful forces and complex humans and faces and TDK continues that power by adding so much more. Morally complex from every angle, its a perfect crime saga under the superhero cover. Each character is given special treatment and in one word, a 'soul'. Bruce Wayne must now face the facts of Rachael being with another man, especially the one appointed as the challenger to Batman's moral values on Gotham. Joker is never given a major origin story and thank god for that, because the direction of Nolan's vision didn't need it. He's unrelenting, mysterious much like Batman yet so self destructive and simply one hell of a scary, menacing clown that promises anarchy and chaos.

I can't go on without mentioning something highly under-looked in films...the score. It is the first soundtrack I would have ever bothered to sit down and listen to throughout and for good reason. Its a rich force that blends beautifully with the complexities of the films morals and emotions, beautifully adding richness to every epic scene on screen, its up there as one of the greatest pieces of music I've heard that can add so much to the moving image.

You all knew I was getting to this...the performances. Christian Bale once again proves to be the greatest mix put on screen for these characters and has settled in nicely. As Bruce Wayne, he continues to show the charming and cheeky wit around the way he is seen in city, yet remains so human, dark, troubled and battles the strong emotions with others as we all do. Aaron Eckhart simply blew me away, especially when everyone is going in for Heath. He's perfect...there I said it and easily blows Tommy Lee off the face of the earth. He's got the perfect charisma to play this all American man as D.A of a major city and really is a nice threat for Bruce in his personal life, because he is not only similar in statue as the force of Gotham, but he has won Rachael over, who no doubt sees him as Bruce without the mask...and when Harvey changes into who he is destined to become, Aaron is scary as hell and really is compelling. Maggie Gyllenhaal is a great replacement over the horribly wooden Katie Holmes and is given more to work with this time around and she blends in just well....AND of course Heath Ledger. What more can I say that no one has already said? Many still believe an posthumous Oscar win would be a sympathy vote, the truth is, if the man was still alive today, he would still win it for what is quite possibly the greatest villain to ever grace celluloid...and that will be argued. Equally unexpected and expecting, his performance as the Joker will stand for a lifetime. Sure Cesar and Jack will always have a face for Joker as the showman side of the character, but Heath is the dark side everyone knows from a 50+ year old character. Charismatic, dark, edgy and scary as all fucking hell, he breezes into every scene easily stealing it and delivering something so intense, so unexpected, yet so real. Its a performance to be remembered by someone who died so suddenly and whether or not he wins the truly deserved Oscar, he's already in the hall of fame in my eyes.

The Dark Knight is a fucking masterpiece. To be, of course as 'opinion', because no one can stand as being right, it is the greatest film I have ever seen and blew my obsessive and very high expectations right out of the water. Moral complex, beautifully captured, deftly controlled, greatly performed...simply outstanding. I still can't say that the film is 'flawless', because I still believe no film can or ever will, but The Dark Knight comes damn close...and being a film so deserving of everything it gets and a film of such exquisite quality and somehow managing to beat my insane expectations, It will be my first film ever I have rated a 5.

<< "You see, nobody panics when things go according to plan. Even if the plan is horrifying. If I told people that a gangbanger was going to get shot, or a busload of soldiers was going to get blown up, nobody would panic. It's all part of the plan. But tell people that one tiny little mayor is going to die and everyone loses their minds!" >>
What should I be saying here, read my review :) You know my obsession is good for it.

...and I was annoyed enough to have to wait until the 24th (release date) here to see it.
